يتناول كتاب (حرب الثلاثين سنة) والذي قامه بتأليفه (محمد حسنين هيكل) في حوالي (4 مجلد) من القطع المتوسط موضوع (تاريخ مصر) مستعرضا المحتويات التالية : لا أعرف أهو تحيز لرجل لما ألف وعرف، أو انه حكم في الموضوع، بصرف النظر عن متغيرات العصور. لكني على شبه اقتناع بأن الكتاب المطبوع على ورق له العمر الطويل، وأنه الحاضر على الدوام، مهما اشتد من حوله الزحام. بمعنى ان الكلمة المكتوبة على الورق باقية، والكلمة المسموعة على الإذاعة والتليفزيون عابرة، والكلمة المكهربة على الكمبيوتر فوارة، وهي مثل كل فوران متلاشية. أي أن الكلمة المكتوبة على الورق بناء صلب : حجر أو معدن، وهكذا كل بناء، وأما غيرها فهو صحيحة متغيرة-خاطفة، ولامعة وبارقة. وبالنسبة لكاتب على ورق وبالحبر فإن كتابته هي بناء عمره، وهكذا فإن كل المجموعة في نهاية المطاف : عمر من الكاتب !.
