في المقدمة يصف جان أهمية الكتاب بأن باقي محاولات التأريخ السينمائي اقتصرت على التأريخ بالنسبة للأقطار، مثل \"تاريخ السينما المصرية\" أو \"تاريخ سينما الشام\"، بينما كتابه هذا يؤرخ \"السينما العربية\" بشكل شامل. ومع ذلك قسم جان الكتاب إلى أقسام بناء على الأقطار الي كان ينتقدها في البداية، وجلس يقارن كل قطر على حده بدون ما تحس ان الأقطار فعلا تنتمي لبيئة وحدة. الكتاب يصلح كدليل تاريخي، راح تحبه اذا قرأته كموسوعة، يعطيك معلومات مثل \"أول فيلم\" / \"أول مخرج\" ومن هالكلام. يعطي أسامي أهم الأفلام من كل جهة، مع أسامي المخرجين البارزين -شخصيا كنت اقرأ و جوالي في يدي كل ما لفت انتباهي اسم فيلم أو مخرج سجلته عندي-. ومن فترة لفترة يعطي معلومات عن سبب تصوير الفيلم بالطريقة الفلانية او عن فيلم ما اكتمل تصويره.
