يقدم الكتاب رواية شبه رسمية للتاريخ السياسي للخانات في أواخر عهد المغول والأنظمة السياسية التيمورية في القوقاز وإيران وخراسان وبلاد ما وراء النهر، يوثق المجلد الأول الفترة من 1316، عندما وصل أبو سعيد بهادر خان، آخر أكبر الخانات المغوليين، للسلطة في بلاد فارس، وحتى وفاة تيمور، مؤسس الأسرة التيمورية، في عام 1405، تعد هذه الفترة مركزية في تاريخ المنطقة باعتبارها فترة من التحولات الاجتماعية والسياسية المهمة، يروي العمل كيفية تفكك خانات المغول وتنافس الأنساب المغولية وغير المغولية من أجل السيادة وتأسيس النسب التيموري لنفسه على أنه الجماعة السياسية والاجتماعية المهيمنة، ويتناول هذا المجلد تيمور ووصوله إلى السلطة وأحفاده المباشرين.
