تشكل رواية «الأم» شهادة فريدة للاعتراف بدور الأم في حياة مؤلفها الكاتب الصيني بنغ شويه مينغ، فهي تربط حياته القديمة بحياته الآنية بغرض تحديد هوية الذات من خلال الكتابة، ولكن الوصول إلى هوية الذات ليس شيئا سهلا، لأن هذه الذات منفتحة على عناصر أخرى تلعب الذاكرة واللغة والخيال في صوغها لتظهر بأكمل وجه، والمتأمل لرواية «الأم» يجد أنها تقدم جانبا سيريا في حياة راويها وذلك من خلال شواهد يستحضرها إلى مسرح السرد \"حقائق ذاتية حياتية معيشة\" تتم مقاربتها من منظور نفسي، يمكن للقارئ تتبع مضمونها في العمل من خلال إشكالية الأم بين الواقع والمثال، فهي تبحث في فكرة وجود الأم ومن ثم غيابها وأثره على الأبناء.
