تغطي الرواية الفترة من 1950-2000 وهي ما تسمى بفترة الإصلاح، وصين ما بعد دینغ سياو بينغ، وتحتوي على الكثير من مثل هذه المشاهد المؤثرة وهنا تبدو الرواية شكلا من أشكال التوثيق فتصحب القارئ عبر الزمن من بداية الإصلاح الزراعي في نهاية الحرب الأهلية، ثم خلال تأسيس فرق المعونة التبادلية والتعاونيات الصغرى في أوائل ومنتصف عقد 1950 إلى سنوات \"القفزة الكبرى إلى الأمام\" التي كشر فيها التطرف عن أنيابه، ثم تأخذنا إلى سنوات المجاعة في أواخر عقد 1950 وبداية الستينيات، ثم مرحلة التآكل المنتظم للاقتصاد الشمولي في الحقبة الجديدة التي انطلقت وسادت دون ضوابط، أي مرحلة الاشتراكية بخصائص رأسمالية.
