يقدم الكاتب في هذا الكتاب قصة من أروع قصصه وهي قصة الحرية الفكرية وأحرارها على مر العصور في الشرق كما في الغرب، ويختم كتابه بفصل له معناه هو \"في تبرير الحرية الفكرية\"، حيث يقول فيه : \"أن التفكير لا يكون حرا طليقا حتى نستطيع الإفضاء به إلى غيرنا، لأن الفكرة طاقة، أي قوة من قوة الذهن، لا تزال منحبسة، شأنها شأن جميع القوى المنحبسة، ومع ذلك فإن التاريخ يثبت أن معظم الذين باحوا بما في صدورهم مما اعتقدوا حقيقة نالة من الاضطهاد بالتعذيب أو الحبس أو القتل الشيء الكثير\".
