تدور أحداث الرواية في مناخ قمعي خانق كان بافل يعمل كاميرا مان في التلفزيون الذي يسميه \"مصنع الأكاذيب\" وكان يحلم ببلد حر ينجز فيه فيلما عن محاولته المجهضة للفرار منذ عشرين سنة عبر الأسلاك الشائكة التي تتطوق البلد وتفصلها عن بقية العالم. ظل يحلم بذلك الفيلم كأمل أخير في اجتراح شيء حقيقي وأصيل من حياة العقم واللا جدوى والضجر والاغتراب والعزلة والحزن العميق. مع اندلاع ثورة المخمل سنة 1989 والتي أطاحت بالنظام الشمولي والشيوعي بجمهورية التشيك، سقط بافل في مأزق حقيقي، فانتهاء الكابوس لم يقده خارج نفق العتمة نحو النور. على العكس من ذلك بدا مناخ الحرية جديدا وغريبا فوجد نفسه في مواجهة سؤال أساسي : هل بدد الجمود والعجز والعطالة التي أصابت روحه زمن القمع أي قدرة على الإنجاز والفعل ؟.
