تتناول الرواية قصة أحمد شابو الذي يعود إلى وطنه ساراييفو في القرن التاسع عشر من الحرب في روسيا، ليصطدم في مقتل وانتحار وحدته العسكرية بالكامل وبعدها وفاة عائلته بالطاعون، ولا يتغلب على هذه الآلام إلا بمساعدة صديقه وحب فتاة مسيحية له، كل ذلك قاده في النهاية إلى حبكة الرواية والتي يواجه فيها الحب والعنف، الخداع والطغيان وتقوم المغامرة الفكرية باستمرار بإعادة تشكيل مصيره وفهمه لمعنى حياته.
