يتناول الكتاب مذكرات الكاتب حيث يحكي ويقول كنت معتزما أن أخصص فصلا من كتاب (في أعقاب الثورة المصرية) لتدوين خواطري ومذكراتي، أتحدث فيها بشئ من التفصيل عن نفسي، ومراحل حياتي، ثم وجدت أن هذا الفصل قد يطول، وليس من حقي وأنا أؤرخ الحركة القومية في مختلف عهودها الحديثة أن أقحم فيها حديثا طويلا عن نفسي، هذا حق لاريب فيه، ولكن أليس لي بعد أن ترجمت لمئات من الشخصيات في تلك الحقبة من الزمن التي أرختها والتي تزيد على مائة وخمسين عاما من تاريخ مصر الحديث.
