إذا استثنينا الفصول الأربعة الأولى من هذا الكتاب وبعض الفصول التى رأينا حذفها، أمكننا أن نقول أنه ملخص عن كتاب السير \"وليم اروبن\" \" خلاصة الفن\" . فقد تقيدنا بآرائه وان لم تنقيد بصورة بل أخذناها من مصادر كثيرة أخرى. ولم نذكر كل الذين ذكرهم من الرسامين بل اقتصرنا على المشهورين. والغاية من اخراج هذا الكتاب هى ان نقدم للقراء مجموعة فاخرة من الصور والرسوم المشهورة في أوربا مع لمحة من تاريخها وتاريخ الرسامين الذين أدوها، ووصف الظروف التى بعثت الفنون وعملت على تطورها في الأزمنة المختلفة اما الفصول الاربعة الأولى فقد حاولت فيها ان أشرح النظرية العامة عن الفنون الجميلة وابين اوجه الانحطاط الذي يعتريها ولذلك فانا المسئول عما أبديت فيها من رأى.
