أراد سلامة موسى من خلال إخراج هذا الكتاب أن يقدم للقراء مجموعة من الصور والرسومات الفنية الأوروبية المشهورة، وأن يضيف إلى ذلك لمحة من تاريخ هذه الرسومات وتاريخ رساميها، بما يشتمل عليه هذا التاريخ من سياقات وظروف أدت إلى بعث هذه الفنون إلى حيز الوجود الإنساني. وقد قدم موسى أيضا شرحا للنظرية العامة في الفنون الجميلة، كما بين أوجه الانحطاط التي تعتريها برأيه. ويعد هذا العمل ملخصا لكتاب السير وليم أوربين الذي جاء بعنوان «خلاصة الفن».
