يتميز هذا الكتاب بخصوصية فريدة، فهو أول كتاب جامع ألفه مؤرخ إسباني عن تاريخ الأندلس الإسلامية، وأول مؤرخ أوروبي يقم عرضا متكاملا لهذا التاريخ، يعتمد فيه صاحبه للمرة الأولى على مصادر مخطوطة عربية أصيلة كانت محفوظة في مكتبة دير الإسكوريال بالكاستل، ومن أشهرها الخزانة الزيدانية. وأول ما يلفت النظر في كتاباته التقدير الكبير للحضارة الإسلامية في الأندلس، والصورة المشرقة التي يقدمها للوجود العربي في إسبانيا، إلى حد الإلحاح على المقارنة بين ما بلغته بلاده في ظل الحكم الإسلامي من تقدم و ازدهار، وما آلت إليه بعده من تخلف حضاري وثقافي.
