من خلال اقتراحه المبكر لرؤية جديدة للسودان، أيقن قرنق بأن الصراع لم يكن بين الشمال والجنوب ولا الأفارقة والعرب أو حتى بين المسلمين والمسيحيين، ولكن كان بين شعب السودان المهمش والزمرة الحاكمة في الخرطوم التي اتقنت استخدام الخطابات الدينية والعرقية من أجل الحفاظ على السلطة، مكن ملاحظة التمييز الممارس على الجنوبين في جميع أنحاء السودان في المكاتب الحكومية والمدارس، ومنذ بداية استقلال السودان كان من الواضح أنه سيتم تجاهل الجنوب من حيث التنمية وتوزيع الموارد الوطنية، وحتى ذلك الوقت لم يكن الجنوبيون قد انتفضوا في وجه الحكومة ولم يقوموا بحمل السلاح.
