جعل الإسلام الصلاة ركن الدين، وسنة النبيين، وجعل أداءها في جماعة سبيلا لالتقاء المسلمين، وإظهارا لشعار الدين، وتخويفا للمعتدين، وإعمارا لبيوت رب العالمين ... وجعل الاقتداء بالأئمة شرط صحة الجماعة، ووسيلة لتحقيق مقاصد هذه الطاعة. ولما كان المكان هو محل الصلاة، وقد تنوعت أحواله، وتجددت أشكاله ؛ لم یکن بد من بحث نوازله في ضوء النصوص الشرعية الصحيحة، ومقاصدها الهادية الحاكمة. مع مناقشة ما يتعلق بالمكان من أحكام المسافة بين الإمام والمأمومين، والمسافة بين صفوف المصلين، وأثر ذلك في تحقيق الاجتماع للصلاة ومقاصده ؛ وهو ما يسعي إليه هذا البحث.
