يناقش الكتاب الذي جاء في أربعة فصول الحركة الكلامية والفرق الفكرية في الإسلام، والفلسفة الإسلامية في المشرق العربي، والمغرب العربي، والتصوف الإسلامي نشأته وطبيعته ومصادره. يقول الدبابسة في مقدمته للكتاب إن جوهر الفلسفة هو التفكير الذي يعني ممارسة الإنسان لخصوصيته عن غيره من الكائنات وهذه الخاصية الإنسانية هي التي جعلت من الإنسان يتقدم ويتطور، فالفلسفة هي حصيلة جهد الإنسان العقلي الحصيف لا تتناقض ولا تتعادى مع الدين في حقيقتها، لأن العقل طريق الفلسفة، والعقل مناط التكليف في الدين، وكلاهما يسعيان إلى الحقيقة.
