يسعى هذا الكتاب لدراسة العلاقة بين نظامين متصارعين على الحكم إبان الفترة من 1868-1913 م ونظام السلطنة الذي يدعو إلى عدم الأخذ بالشريعة في كافة نواحي الدولة بل فما يتناسب ورغبات حكامها ونظام الإمامة الذي يدعو إلى تطبيق الشريعة في كافة نواحي الحياة وفق المذهب الإباضي لذا لم يحظ بتأييد الكثير من العمانيين لتستره بالمذهبية فأبعدته عن هدفه الأساسي وهو إصلاح الدولة وتحولت الإمامة إلى محاولة للتخلص من الآخر وتهميشه.
