تأتي أهمية دراسة المدن ضروريا لمواجهة المشاكل الكبيرة والمعقدة التي تواجهه البشرية في عالمنا المعاصر، والتي لا سبيل لحلها إلا بالبحـث والدراسة المعمقة المستندة احدث المناهج والنظريات التي تواصل لها العلم. فالسليمانية مدينة عراقية، أسسها إبراهيم باشا بابـان عـام 1784 م، الذي أطلق عليها ذلك الأسم نسبة لأسم والده سليمان باشا، أحد أمراء سلالة بابان التي كانت لها إمارة خلال تلك الفترة بمنطقة السليمانية. وظلت المحافظـة عاصمة الإمارة البابانيـة حـتـى عـام 1851 م.
