يروي \"هونر سليم\" في القصة حكاياته مع بندقية أبيه والجبال وقصص حب اقتضت شروطها ان تنتهي من بداياتها. يستهل الكاتب باغتراب تاريخي لرواية رحلة التعرف إلى السلاح والأبجدية والأسماء والصور، ولد جده كرديا على أرض كردية ولما جاء العثمانيون قالوا له أنت عثماني، ثم فرض عليه أن يكون تركيا عندما انهارت الإمبراطورية العثمانية. خرج الأتراك واستعاد سليم ملايي الجد الأكبر لهونر كرديته في ظل مملكة الشيخ محمود، لكن الإنكليز وصلوا وأصبح انكليزيا، وتعلم البعض من كلماتهم. خرج الانكليز وصار ال\"ملايي\" عراقيا من دون أن يعرف ما معنى هذا الاسم العراق الذي كان لغزا بالنسبة إليه. لم يكن فخورا بهذا الاسم وكذلك الأمر بالنسبة لابنه شيرو ملايي، أما آزاد فكان صغيرا بعد.
