الروائي يحكي فيها عن فترة انتقال السلطة من سلالة قاجار إلى سلالة بهلوي، حيث الأرستقراطية على وشك الدمار، والحداثة في التقاليد والمفاهيم تطل برأسها، وعبر اشتغاله بتقنيات تيار الوعي، عرض شخوص روايته وحكاياهم مقاربا لمفاهيم الحرية والطغيان والعبودية، والنظر إلى المرأة بين عصرين، في كتابة لم يسبقه إليها أحد في الرواية الإيرانية، معتمدا تقنيات حديثة، ورؤية شديدة العمق للإنسان وصراعاته الداخلية، ترجمت الرواية إلى الإنجليزية والفرنسية وعدد من اللغات الأخرى، وكتبت حولها عديد من الكتب والدراسات والرسائل الأكاديمية، كما حولت إلى فيلم يحمل اسمها أخرجه (بهمن فرمان آرا)
