لقد عشت تسعا وخمسين سنة، وفي خلال كل هذا الوقت كنت أشعر بذاتي في جسدي ويلوح لي أن الشعور بقي هو عين حياتي، غير أن هذا وهم وضلال في ضلال والحقيقة هي أني قد عشت ولكن لا أعرف إن كنت قد عشت تسعا وخمسين سنة أو تسعا وخمسين ألف سنة أو تسعا وخمسين ثانية، وأن حياة ذاتي لا يمكن حصرها في جسدي ولا في مدة كيانه في الوجود ؛ لو سألت نفسي عن دراية ما أنا ؟ لأجبت: أنا شيء مفكر وحساس، وأما عن زمان ومكان ولادتي ومتى وأين بدأت أن أشعر وأفكر، لا أعرف شيئا عن يقين جازم، لأن وجداني يقول لي فقط أنا موجود في العالم الذي أجد فيه نفسي الآن.
