يدلنا استقراء التاريخ على أن الصراع بين الدين والعلم كان رهيبا حقا. خاصة في أوربا إبان عصر النهضة. ويرجع الخلاف التقليدي بين رجال الدين ورجال العلم آنا ذاك... إلى اعتراف رجال الدين بالغيبيات وتأثيرها في حياة الناس... وإنكار العلم لها وإقراره لما هو ثابت من قوانين الوجود على نحو حسي. ولقد لفتت آراء الفيلسوف كونت النظر إلى أن الإيمان الموروث يجب أن يحل محله إيمان أساسه المعرفة كأوسع ما يمكن أن تكون. وهذا ما يعرضه الدكتور هيكل في فصول هذا الكتاب الذي انتهى فيه إلى ضرورة التوفيق بين جانبي الحياة: الروحي» والمادي لبلوغ التوازن العقلي... وإن الدين والعلم لم تكن بينهما خصومة... ولن تكون بينهما خصومة.
