Overview
مسرحية من خمسة فصول، للكاتب البريطاني \"كريستوفر مارلو\"، نشرت للمرة الأولى تحت عنوان \"مأساة يهودي مالطا الثري الشهيرة\"، ويرجح الباحثون أن \"مارلو\" كتبها إما في عام 1589م أو في عام 1590م، وقد عرضت على المسرح عام 1592 م، وحققت نجاحا كبيرا ما زال مستمرا حتى يومنا هذا. وتقول المصادر إن هذه المسرحية قد أدرجت في \"سجل الوراقين/Stationers’ Register\" في السابع عشر من أيار من عام 1594م، أما الطبعة التي وصلت إلى عصرنا هذا، فهي من إصدارات عام 1633م. وتحكي المسرحية قصة الأحقاد والصراعات الدينية والطائفية التي كانت سائدة في أوروبا في تلك الحقبة من الزمن، إضافة إلى الصراع السياسي والعسكري بين الإمبراطورية العثمانية وإسبانيا من أجل الهيمنة على البحر المتوسط. ويرى بعض الباحثين أن هذه المسرحية كانت المصدر الذي اتكأ عليه \"وليم شكسبير\" في كتابة مسرحيته \"تاجر البندقية\".
