الرواية تدور في فضاء سريالي بالكامل وموهم، وشخصياتها قبل أن تكون حقيقية فهي رموز وإشارات. تحاشى بهرام صادقي في هذا العمل كثرة الحشو وإطالة الكلام والتوضيحات البصرية، وعرف الشخصيات من خلال الحوار الذي أدراه بين \"السكرتير الشاب\" و\"الدكتور حاتم\". يدور موضوع الرواية حول المصير المحتوم للإنسان وهو تقبل الحياة الجبرية والموت. يبدو من النظرة الأولى أن صادقي يعتقد أن كل إنسان يبدأ في الموت مع ولادته، والقوى الغيبية ترسم له قدره الذي لا يملك تغييره. سواء قبلت الموت أم لم تقبل، خفت أم لم تخف، لابد أن تخضع له في نهاية الأمر. وفي هذا الخضم من يكون غارقا في ملذات الحياة يكون الأكثر خوفا من الموت. لكن ليس هذا التحليل سوى الغطاء الظاهر للقصة لأنها قصة رمزية وسريالية.
