Overview
تحكي الرواية قصة مصور سينمائي متنقل يهرب من مدينة إلى أخرى بسبب الخوف من طالبان، بطل الرواية، آصف، هو شاب درس السينما لكنه لم يحصل على شهادة جامعية ولم يصنع فيلما. تتغير حياته بسبب الحروب الأهلية، ويبدأ في إنشاء دار سينما في كابول باستخدام معدات بسيطة، تتعرض دار السينما التي أنشأها آصف للتدمير على يد الجهاديين، مما يجبره على الفرار إلى مدينة أخرى. يستمر في التنقل هربا من طالبان، محاولا الحفاظ على حلمه في عرض الأفلام. في النهاية، يقبض عليه، ويقوم بذكاء بربط مقتله على يد طالبان بعرض سينمائي، حيث يشاهد الرجال الذين يعتبرون الأفلام والموسيقى محرمة شرعا أفلامه كل ليلة في رحلة تشبه ألف ليلة وليلة.
