تدور أحداث الرواية في كل زمان ومكان، فعملية قتل عصفورا مغردا هي جريمة مثلها مثل قتل أي إنسان على وجه الأرض، لقد جعلت \"هاربر لي\" من روايتها إطارا يعرض قيم وأفكار مرحلة ماضية في إطار تجربة معيشة، وليس مجرد أفكار تجريدية فقط، فالرواية لم تقدم قضية التفرقة العنصرية في أميركا فقط بل عرضت للوجه الآخر من القيم المضادة والتي تتمثل في أهمية التمسك بالحق والعدل والمساواة في مواجهة الظلم والاستعباد، وبهذا المعنى تحمل الرواية أبعادا سوسيولوجية تشهد على مأزق اللامعنى والعبثية المنحدرين من صلب الحضارة الغربية.
