يتكون هذا الكتاب من 40 فصلا. تدور أحداث الكتاب من خماسية محكيات الوجع والالتذاذ (مهجة) : حول موضوع العبودية من خلال تنبع حياة الفتاة (ليزا) من بلاد (الخزر) إلى الحاضرة الأندلسية. كانت أمها قد باعتها من فقر لأحد سماسرة النخاس اليهودي (نعوم بن شلوم) الذي قام بتربيتها تربية (علية) الرقيق وصدرها ك (سلعة آدمية) إلى الأندلس، حيث عانت مرارة الاسترقاق والاستغلال البشع من قبل سيدها \"شعلان\" الذي غير اسمها إلى مهجة\". أخذ صنعة النخاسة عن كافله (التميمي) أمين النخاسين بالحاضرة الأندلسية، لكنه لم يمتهن النخاسة إنما فتح دارا للفسق والفجور بالربض الذي يحمل اسمه.
