جاءت التجربة الديمقراطية في البحرين كمحصلة لتفاعل عوامل محلية وطنية وإقليمية ودولية، ولكن الشرارة التي أطلقتها كانت مبادرة جلالة الملك حمد بن عيسى آل خليفة منذ توليه السلطة عام 1999. ومن ثم فهي سابقة على دعوات الإصلاح الدولية التي ظهرت خاصة بعد أحداث 11 سبتمبر، ولهذا لا غرو أن عكست التجربة خصائص ذاتية واستفادت من تاريخ البحرين وثقافتها وخبرتها السياسية منذ استقلالها. فأي تجربة هي محصلة المجتمع الذي تعيش فيه وتتعامل معه في شتى المجالات. ويستعرض هذا الكتاب خصائص التطور السياسي للبحرين وأثر ذلك على بنائها الديمقراطي كما يعرض للهياكل النظامية للنظام السياسي وسعيه نحو التحديث الوطني في إطار الحفاظ على الهوية الخاصة للمجتمع وتراثه وثقافته.
