المقامات فن من متون الكتابة العربية. وهي نوع من القصص القصيرة، لغتها متينة السبك، يدور الحوار فيها بين شخصين ويلتزم مؤلفها بالصفة الأدبية التي تعتمد على السجع. والمعروف عن المقامات بشكلها الظاهري أنها تدور على الكدية والاستجداء ولكن الحريري قصد تأليفها نقد المجتمع نقدا بناء، عسى أن تجد لهذه العيوب إصلاحا، فأسلوب عرضها خفيف وعباراتها رشيقة يسهل على القارئ فهمها، خصوصا وأنها تتناول قضايا تخصهم كالمشاكل الاجتماعية. الحريري صاحب المقامات كان أحد أئمة عصره. اشتملت مقاماته على شيء كثير من كلام العرب ومن لغاتها وأمثالها ورموزها وأسرار كلامها. تدور مقامات الحريري حول ابتزاز المال عن طريق الحيلة من خلال مغامرات بطلها أبي زيد السروجي التي يرويها الحارث بن همام
