هذا وإن كان غرض المؤلف من هذه المقامات أن ينصح نفسه، فلا شك أنها من بعد-منارة تهدي القارئ إلى التقوى والصلاح، وتفيده في مجالا الأدب والفن. فقد عمل المؤلف جهده في إحكام صنعتها، وسبك معدنها، مودعا فيها من المعاني السامية الرفيعة ما يزيد المتبصر فيها في دين الله نورا لما فيها من قبسات الحق والخير والجمال. ولم يسر الزمخشري في مقاماته على نهج الهمذاني والحريري، ولم يستخدم طريقتهما، وإنما هو في المقامة نسيج وحده، فلا نجد في مقاماته هزلا كما نجد عند سابقيه، وإنما نجد الجد كل الحد. ولعل السبب في ذلك يعود أول الأمر إلى جدية المواضيع التي طرقها من جهة، وإلى أن وعظه وعظ حقيقي ينبع من أعماق قلب عامر بالإيمان يختلف عن ذلك الوعظ الذي كان يظهر في مقامات الهمذاني أو الحريري، ويحس القارئ أنه وعظ كان يستعمله بطل الرواية أحبولة لاصطياد أموال الناس الذين يفترون به.
