يتناول هذا الكتاب قصة حياة العالم العربي المسلم الحسن بن الحسن بن الهيثم، المعروف باسم ابن الهيثم، الذي ولد في البصرة عام 965 م وتوفي عام 1038 م. بعد أن أنهى دراساته الأساسية، أولى اهتماما خاصا لدراسة الرياضيات والطبيعيات والطب والفلك والأخلاق والمنطق. في عام 384 هجري، فر ابن الهيثم من أمير البصرة وسافر إلى بغداد. ومع تعرض كتابه \"الهيئة\" لهجوم المتشددين، اضطر إلى الانتقال مجددا وهذه المرة إلى الشام قبل أن يستقر في القاهرة. هناك فكر في بناء سد لنهر النيل لمواجهة سنوات الجفاف خلال عهد الخليفة الفاطمي الحاكم بأمر الله.
