يتناول المؤلف في هذا الكتاب علما من أعلام الشعر الحسن بن هانئ أبو نواس الذي عاش في العصر العباسي. ولد أبو نواس في سوق الأهواز، وهو مولد عربي من جهة الأب، سندي أو فارسي من جهة الأم، والنسب الأخير هو الأرجح، كما جاء في شعره. كان ذكيا يحب العلم، ويجنح إلى معايشة الشيوخ، وذوي الوقار، والمراهقين من ناشئة الأدب. وفي الكوفة دأب أبو نواس على حضور مجالس الشعراء مع والبة، وكانوا يعقدونها في كل يوم من كل يوم، للشراب والمناومة، وكانوا يتناولون وهم يشربون، أشعار القدامى والمحدثين بالنقد أو الإطراء أو التفسير وكان قد تعود الارتجال في تلك المجالس. وكانت شهرة الشاعر قد سبقته إلى بغداد، دعا ولي هارون الرشيد الخلافة اتخذ أبا نواس شاعرا له وقربه إليه، لأن أبا نواس كان أكبر شاعر عرف في ذلك الجيل.
