ألفت هذا الكتاب في سنة 1953، حين كنت في إبان شبابي وهو زمن ينتظر فيه من الفرد كثير من الخطأ ويغتفر له غير قليل من الشطط، لذلك حين أقبلت على إعادة النظر فيه لأعده لطبعته الجديدة كنت أتوقع أن يحتاج إلى كثير من التبديل والتخفيف، لكنى وجدت بعد التروي فيه أنني ما زلت على أكثر آرائي التي بسطتها منذ سبعة عشر عاما، وأنه لا يلزمه إلا تعديل العبارة في مواطن غير جوهرية ولكن تبقي مسألة أخرى هي حق الناقد الأدبي في استخدام علم النفس الحديث لفهم الشخصيات الأدبية وفهم إنتاجها.
