لطالما أغرت بغداد بكل تاريخها وعمقها الحضاري وما شهدته من أحداث وتغيرات الكثيرين للكتابة عنها تاريخا وحاضر، وقد اهتمت العديد من الكتابات بمعالم ومناطق ومحلات بغداد، سواء أكانت منطقة بذاتها داخل بغداد أو بغداد في العموم. ومع ذلك لا يزال هناك الكثير من الأمور التي تحتاج إلى التوقف والدراسة، منها ما يخص ذاكرة المكان من مواقع المحلات ومسمياتها وأبرز معالمها وما تغير عليها وأين مواقع ما اندثر منها. ويهدف هذا الكتاب إلى معالجة هذه الأمور وتغطيتها. إن بعض محلات بغداد قديمة جدا تعود إلى العصر العباسي وحتى قبله، وقسم منها حديث نسبيا، وهو ما يجعل من الصعب تغطيتها ضمن كتاب واحد، لذا تم تحديد الإطار الزمني لهذا الكتاب بمئة عام تبدأ من منتصف القرن التاسع عشر.
