يعالج هذا الكتاب ظاهرة الأسطورة في شعر السياب من خلال كونها فكرا إنسانيا بدائيا، حمله السياب موقفا خلاقا تبدى في فهمه للواقع المعاش ومحاولة تغييره، بأن أظهر ثغراته وتناقضاته، وعلاقاته غير الحميمة، فصور زيف المدينة التي يعمها التضاد والتدهور والتطاحن، فكان أن دل موقفه هذا على فهم وانتباه دقيقين لعملية التوظيف الأسطوري، التي لا تقوم إلا على وعي تام بجوهر رافدها الإنساني حين ينظر إليها الفنان بطريقة أكثر عمقا وتفتحا، إلى جانب إنه استطاع أن يجعل منها رؤية جديدة لإنسان جديد، غير إنسانها الذي رآها وصاغها في البدء، فرسحت مدركاته نهجا للتوظيف الأسطوري إفتتن به جيل من الشعراء من بعده.
