يتناول كتاب (القاهرة الجديدة) والذي قام بتأليفه نجيب محفوظ، موضوع (رواية) الكتاب رواية وهي بداية الرواية الواقعية في أدب \"نجيب محفوظ\"، وقد تناول في هذه الرواية المجتمع المصري في فترة الثلاثينيات، وما شاع فيه من فساد وتسلط وانتهازية ومحسوبية واتساع الهوة بين الأثرياء وعامة الشعب. وقد جسد «محفوظ» ذلك من خلال شخصية \"محجوب عبد الدائم\"، الخارج من رحم الأزمة الاقتصادية التي يعانيها أبناء المجتمع، والساخط على وضعه الاجتماعي، المستعد لفعل وقبول أي شيء مقابل الثراء والوصول إلى المناصب العليا، حتى إن كلفه ذلك الزواج من عشيقة \"الباشا\". وفي مقابل \"محجوب\" هناك زميلاه في الجامعة؛ \"مأمون رضوان\" المنتمي للتيار الإسلامي، و\"علي طه\" صاحب الفكر الاشتراكي. وتأتي شخصية \"إحسان\" حبيبة \"علي طه\" لتجسد المعاناة الكبرى لهذه الطبقة حين تصبح عشيقة \"الباشا\" وزوجة \"محجوب عبد الدائم\".
