أبدع أبو حيان التوحيدي في التعبير عن أفكار فلاسفة القرن الرابع الهجري، وصارت كتبه سجلات لأفكارهم، التي قصدوها في العلم الإلهي، والعلم الطبيعي، والمنطق، والفلسفة والأخلاق والسياسة، وكل قضية اتصلت بالآداب والفنون. إن أبا حيان أكبر الفلاسفة على الإطلاق بعد الجاحظ، الذي اعتبره أستاذه في الأسلوب والفكر والمناظرة، فوصفه أبو حيان بأنه كان \"واحد الدنيا\"، أما ياقوت الحموي فقد وصف أبا حيان بأنه \"فيلسوف الأدباء وأديب الفلاسفة، فرد الدنيا الذي لا نظير له ذكاء وفطنة ومكنة\" لقد استطاع أبو حيان أن يعبر بلغة أدبية عن أعمق المشكلات التي كانت تقلق بال الفلاسفة في عصره، حتى بدا كأننا، لأول مرة في تاريخ الأدب العربي، نشهد فنانا أصيلا، لا يعجز فنه عن الاطلاع على أدق الحقائق الفلسفية، وغير الفلسفية.
