لقد أراد كامو أن يبرز أهمية الإنسان ودوره في ظل الواقع المعاصر الذي تتصارع فيه الأمم والأفكار والإيديولوجيات ويشيع فيه القتل والتدمير، وإلغاء حرية الإنسان بحيث ارتكزت دراسته للإنسان حول محورين أساسيين هما العبث والتمرد، فالعالم كله عبث لا معنى له إلا الإنسان الذي يعد المعنى الأوحد في الوجود، والذي يطالبه كامو يرفض العبث ومقاومته بدلا من الهروب منه، ويقوم العبث بإيقاظ الوعي للانتقال إلى التمرد الذي يتضمن تعاليا روحيا تحققه الذات، ويرفض فيه الفرد القوة التي تسبب له الشقاء والتعاسة.
