نحاول في هذا الكتاب تقديم وتعريف التراث الشفوي وشرح ماهيته بشكل عام. وتهدف من وراء ذلك على الأخص حث الباحثين على تناول مواضيع هذا التراث على محمل الجد ودراستها بأسلوب علمي يتناسب وأهميته التاريخية والفلسفية والحضارية. كما نود من دراستنا هذه إبراز الوجه الجمالي للتراث الشفوي علنا نستطيع طرح المقارنة بينه وبين ما يقدمه البعض في أيامنا هذه من أعمال يدعون أنها استمرار لذلك التراث وهي في الحقيقة مجرد تشويه له وذلك على حساب الفن العفوي الأصيل حتى كادت تطمسه نهائيا وتحل محله معتمدة بذلك على تهاون وسائل الإعلام الجماهيرية الحديثة.
