(على الناقد المسرحي إلا يقف في خندق معاد الخندق الفنان المبدع، كاتبا أم ممثلا أم مخرجا أم تقنيا، فعمله مكمل للعمل الفني وليس منفصلا عنه) من هذا المنطلق ومن منطلق الإحساس بجوهر الأزمة المسرحية العربية خلال السبعينات أزمة الضغط والإغراء للاختيار غير الصحي بين النزعة التجارية والنزعة الدعائية، ينطلق رياض عصمت في تحليلاته النقدية لنماذج من الأعمال المسرحية العربية وتوجهاتها الفكرية، مركزا بصورة خاصة على التجربة المسرحية في سورية محاولا سبر غور هذه التجربة، تحديد ايجابياتها وسلبياتها، استشفاف مستقبلها وكل ذلك بروح العاشق للمسرح، المتتبع لأعماله، المعايش لكل صغيرة وكبيرة فيه روح الناقد المتواضع الذي يأمل أن يقدم مرجعا موضوعيا الدارسي المسرح في المستقبل عسى أن يساعدهم على بلوغ رؤية أوضح.
