تدور قصة تأليف أبي حيان لكتابه \"الإمتاع والمؤانسة\" حول علاقته بالوزير أبي عبد الله العارض، الذي كان صديقا للمهندس أبو الوفاء. قام أبو الوفاء بتقريب أبي حيان من الوزير، مما أدى إلى أن يصبح أبو حيان من سمار الوزير، حيث سامره لمدة سبع وثلاثين ليلة. خلال هذه الليالي، كان الوزير يطرح أسئلة متنوعة، وكان أبو حيان يجيب عليها. بعد ذلك، طلب أبو الوفاء من أبي حيان أن يسجل كل ما دار بينه وبين الوزير، فاستجاب لذلك وقرر تدوين الأحاديث التي تناولت مواضيع مختلفة. الكتاب يتضمن مجموعة من النقاشات التي تتراوح بين الجدي والهزلي، ويتميز بتنوع مواضيعه التي لا تتبع ترتيبا معينا، بل تعكس خطوات العقل وخيال المؤلف. بدأ أبو حيان الكتاب بأسلوب صوفي، ثم انتقل إلى الحديث، واختتمه بأسئلة ملحة.
