هذا الكتاب هو (سيرة تشيخوف الروحية) كما يقول عنه مؤلفه، أجل سيرة هي في الحقيقة سيرورة، لا سيرورة فرد من الناس بعينه، بل ملحمة شعب قرأها غوغول ودوستويفسكي. تولستوي وبيلنسكي وغيرهم من أكابر كتاب روسيا والاتحاد السوفييتي وتشيخوف أيضا ؛ ولكن يبدو لنا الآن وبعد أن كان ما كان أن هذه القراءات العبقرية كلها مقصرة عن حقيقة الشعب الروسي ؛ على أية حال فإن الكتاب الذي تقدمه وزارة الثقافة للقاري هو دراسة ورواية في آن واحد دراسة تشدك إليها لما تتضمن من أحداث ولقاءات من نماذج إنسانية وانعطافات ؛ بحيث تتساءل ما إذا كنت تقرأ دراسة أم ملحمة ؟
