يعرض الكتاب لمجالات علم نفس الأدب التي تتحرك نحو دراسة نفسية المبدع، وعملية الإبداع المنتجة للنص، وكذلك دراسة العلاقات والبنى التي تؤسس النص وسيكولوجية الأدب التي تطال بالدراسة حتى الأثر الافتراضي على جمهور المتلقين في ما يعرف ب سيكولوجية الجمهور وبناء على ذلك، تندرج موضوعات الكتاب ضمن ستة فصول بعد المقدمة؛ الفصل الأول، بعنوان يتناول جذور تلك العلاقة، ومفهوم التطهير، وبالأدب خصوصا علاقة علم النفس بالفن عموما والإبداع الفني من منظور علم النفس، والرموز الجنسية التي قد يلجأ إليها الدارسون في التحليل، والعلاقة بين الحلم والشعر، وبذور عملية الإبداع الفني، والإبداع والجنون.
