في هذا الكتاب يؤكد سيجموند فرويد أن تفسير الأحلام إنما يعني قراءتها. فما الحلم سوى كلام مكتوب بكتابة مصورة مثل اللغز المصور أو النص الهيروغليفي وهو إذن -شأن كل الكلام- يفترض لغة وهذه اللغة هي التي يقوم فرويد في هذا الكتاب بفك طلاسمها ودراستها، مبينا نحوها وبلاغتها ومفرداتها الأساسية ويأتي كتاب (تفسير الأحلام) لفرويد ليكشف طبيعة الحلم، كما يضم أخطر الاكتشافات في تاريخ معرفة الإنسان لنفسه. ويعد نقطة تطور في علم النفس والطب النفسي. كذلك اشتمل تفسير الأحلام على دراسات فرويد في التحليل النفسي معتمدا على إجراء تحليل منهجي على نفسه متخذا من إحلامه مادة هذا التحليل، فاستكمل بها فهمه للنمو النفسي أثناء الطفولة.
