يحكي الدكتور الحص عن عصارة تجاربه في الحكم، ومن ثم يقدّم صورة مصغرة عن وضع الأمة العربية، كعلاقة السلطة المصرية بفلسطين، ومشكلة العرب في لبنان حيث «تمزّق الوطن الصغير إلى عصبيات مذهبية وطائفية حادّة»، وانصراف الأقطار العربية الثرية عن القضية منشغلة بأزماتها المالية، ليخلص الى أن «لا أمل إلا بانطلاق تيار عابر للحدود المصطنعة يناضل من أجل الفوز بحرية حقيقية وخلاقة». وإذ يطرح مساءلة ثاقبة عن أوروبا التي توحّدت دولها نظراً إلى مستوى شعوبها الثقافي والحريات التي تتمتع بها، فإنه يؤكّد أن العرب أجدر بالتوحّد «لأن لنا لغة وثقافة ومصيراً مشتركاً تجمعنا، إلا أن ذلك لم يحدث بعد».
