منذ ما يزيد على قرنين، اجترحت الولايات المتحدة لذاتها فلسفة خاصة بها. ثمة فلاسفة كبار وفلسفات أصيلة تبرر ما يعطى للفلسفة الأميركية من اهتمام، ولاسيما أنه تفرعت عنها بعض كبريات حركات الفكر المعاصر: في الإبستيمولوجيا والتربية واللسانيات وعلم الدلالة والأخلاق والسياسة، إضافة إلى الفلسفة ذاتها. هذا الكتاب هو ترجمة لطبعة ثالثة مراجعة ومضاف إليها قسم يتـناول المرحلة بين 1976-1996، حيث عولجت المسائل الفلسفية الخاصة بالولايات المتحدة : «هوية » الفيلسوف «الأميركي »، وإسهام الولايات المتحدة في فلسفة المدينة، وفي فلسفة الأقليات : الفلسفة الأفرو أميركية، الفلسفة الهندية ، فلسفة النسوية. كما تم التطرق إلى مسألة هي في صلب النقاش الفلسفي المعاصر، أي مسألة أساس الفلسفة: الإيمان المعرفة السلطة.
