هذا الكتاب ليس إلا مدخلا متواضعا وبدائيا إلى ظاهرة خطيرة حصلت في أوروبا الغربية، وفيها وحدها، ألا وهي ظاهرة التنوير. إنه يحاول الكشف عن الجذور الأولى لهذه الظاهرة، وكيف انبثقت لأول مرة في إيطاليا، وهولندا وانجلترا... إنه يكشف عن الفرق بين ثلاث مراحل أساسية في تاريخ الفكر الأوروبي : العصور الوسطى، ثم عصر النهضة، فعصر التنوير بالمعنى الحرفي للكلمة. فالنهضة كانت تنويرا، ولكنها لم تشكل قطيعة إبستمولوجية كاملة مع العصور الوسطى. كانت مرحلة انتقالية مترجرجة، على الرغم من جرأة مفكريها وعظمة إنجازاتها. وحده القرن الثامن عشر، أي عصر التنوير الكبير، استطاع أن يحقق هذه القطيعة الكبرى التي لا تكاد تصدق، والتي لا تزال تدهشنا حتى اليوم.
