يتناول الكتاب حيث أن القضية التي يطرحها ابن رشد في كتابه \"فصل المقال في تقرير ما بين الشريعة والحكمة من اتصال\" هي بلغتنا المعاصرة: قضية العلاقة بين الدين والمجتمع كما طرحت في التاريخ العربي الإسلامي إلى عهده. وإذا أردنا تلخيص مضمون هذا الكتاب وجب القول أنه فتوى نقض وإبرام في شرعية الفلسفة، وتأسيس لفقه التأويل، ومن وراء ذلك طرح العلاقة بين الدين والمجتمع. وبعبارة أخرى الكتاب هو بيان حكم الشرع الإسلامي في \"علوم الأوائل\" وبالتخصيص \"الفلسفة وعلوم المنطق.\" والمخاطبون المعنيون الأول.
