ينطلق هذا الكتاب من تصور مناهض للتمركز العرقي في الترجمة، من أجل الحفاظ على ما يدعوه المؤلف ؟ \"غرابة النص الأصلي\"، فالترجمة هي مقام استقبال الغريب المتمثل في لغة الآخر الأجنبي وثقافته، وهي أيضا انفتاح وإنصات وتحاور وتفاعل مع هذا الآخر. وفي هذا الإطار تبرز أهمية الترجمة الحرفية، بوصفها بديلا من الترجمة التحويلية التي تشوه النص الأصلي وتبعده عن مقاصده. وقد شدد برمان بهذا الخصوص على \"ترجمة الحرف\" التي تقوم على مبدأ نقل العمل الأجنبي بأسلوب يجعلنا لا نشعر بأن هناك ترجمة، أي بما يعطي الانطباع بأن المؤلف كان سيكتب الشيء نفسه، لو أنه كتب نصه باللغة المترجمة.
