بدأ الاهتمام فعليا بالتعلم التعاوني بالقرن الماضي في بداية السبعينات وخلال الثمانينات زاد الاهتمام به أكثر كاستراتيجية في التسعينات والأكثر عناية خاصة بسبب إمكانية تطبيقه في المراحل الدراسية كافة إضافة إلى الكليات والمعاهد واستخدامه كبديل للتعليم النمطي الذي يركز على المنافسة بين المتعلمين فقط بدلا من خلق روح التعاون فيما بينهم والتعلم التعاوني فريد بين نماذج التدريس لأنه يستخدم مهمة مختلفة او عملا مختلفا اذا يعد وسيلة من وسائل تنظيم البيئة يقوم على مبدأ وضع الطلبة في مجموعة صغيرة غير متجانسه من حيث القدرات أو الخلفية العلمية أو الأداء لإنجاز المهمات المشتركة بنجاح أفضل تبعا لتعاون المجموعة بعضها البعض الآخر.
