إن الديسلكسيا ليست حالة إدمان، ولكنها حالة يكون فيها الفرد مختلفا عن الآخرين في عمليات التفكير والتعلم وما يتطلبانه من مهارات الإدراك البصري والسمعي، وتخزين المعلومات والرموز وفهمها والتعامل معها، وإستدعائه في عمليات الإتصال اللغوي وغير اللغوي والتعلم. وأي قصور في مهارة أو أكثر يؤدي إلى إعاقة أو أكثر من إعاقات التعلم، ويجد المصاب بها صعوبات في، أو في فهم معنى كلمات مكتوبة، وينص ترجمة اللغة إلى فكر، أو في التعبير عن الأفكار كتابة او حديثا هذا التعريف للديسلكسيا على ألاّ يكون هناك نقص في الإبصار أو السمع أو نقص في درجة الذكاء أو إضطراب نفسي أو إنفعالي أو إجتماعي أو سلوكي أو نقص في الدافعية. ومن هنا جاء إهتمام الباحث بدراسة ظاهرة العسر القرائي، بسبب الملحوظات المتكررة لشكوى الكثير من أولياء الأمور من حيث قدرة أبنائهم على القراءة الصحيحة.
